ACTION REPORT

School Board Meeting - May 19, 1998

Superintendent Report: Robert Aquilar, Insurance Reconstruction Estimator, presented each board member a packet with information regarding update on the status on the research for MISD to receive the proper monetary return on insurance due to the Elementary school fire. Mr. Aquilar also addressed to the board the hiring of an engineer to review documents, perform evaluations, provide professional opinions, and provide other engineering services as requested in conjunction with the repair/replacement of the elementary school fire.

Charles Voelter, architect with the Voelter group, gave the board an update on the progress regarding the construction of the elementary school.

Principals Jo Ann Garrison, Patricia Smith, Letha Hopkins and Rockney Terry presented the Board the TAAS test results and gave a brief overview. President Alston congratulated the principals on this years gain on the scores. Appreciate the hard work.

Presentation to Keith Drews: President Alston presented a plague to Keith Drews, outgoing Board member, for his nine years of dedicated service on the Board.

Consent Agenda: Motion by Mr. Arthur Douglas, seconded by Mrs. Billie Jones, to approve the Consent Agenda. The motion carried unanimously. Consent Agenda items : agenda, minutes of the April 21, 1998 meeting, bills and budget amendment (s).

Oath of Office: Janet Jones, Notary Public, administered the Oath of Office to incumbent Keith Alston and newly elected board member, Carman Dingrando.

Election of Officers: Motion by Mrs. Billie Jones, seconded by Ms. Lowanda Washington, to nominate Arthur Douglas as President. Motion by Ms. Rose Sedillo, seconded by Mr. Carman Dingrando, to nominate Keith Alston as President. A vote was then called for. Voting for Mr. Douglas: Mrs. Billie Jones, Ms. Lowanda Washington and Mr. Arthur Douglas. Voting for Mr. Alston: Ms. Rose Sedillo, Mr. Carman Dingrando, Ms. Elaine Truett and Mr. Keith Alston. Mr. Keith Alston was elected President.

Motion by Ms. Elaine Truett to nominate Ms. Rose Sedillo as Vice President. There being no other nominations, Ms. Sedillo was elected Vice President by acclamation.

Motion by Mrs. Billie Jones to nominate Ms. Elaine Truett as Secretary. There being no other nominations, Ms. Truett was elected Secretary by acclamation.

Results of Closed Session:

Grievance of Employee - No action was taken due to Mr. Joe Welps withdrawing his grievance.

Supt./Board Members to Attend Mediation-Lynette Mayes/Texas Commission on Human Rights - Motion by Ms. Lowanda Washington, seconded by Mr. Arthur Douglas, to authorize Superintendent Thornell, Board members - Mrs. Billie Jones, Ms. Elaine Truett and Ms. Rose Sedillo as alternate to attend mediation of Lynette Mayes/Texas Commission on Human Rights. The motion carried unanimously.

Personnel Employment 1997-98 - Motion by Ms. Elaine Truett, seconded by Mr. Arthur Douglas, to employ James Glockzin for the 1997-98 school year. The motion carried unanimously.

Employment of Asst. HS Principal - Motion by Ms. Rose Sedillo, seconded by Mrs. Billie Jones, to employ Gabriel Cary as Assistant High School Principal for the 1998-99 school year. The motion carried unanimously.

Personnel Employment - Motion by Ms. Elaine Truett, seconded by Mr. Arthur Douglas, to employ the following for the 1998-99 school year: Pearlie Coats-5th grade teacher; Jill Brzozowski-history teacher high school; Susan Cary-Bilingual elementary; Greg Barnett-6th grade resource teacher; Jeffrey Jackson-3rd grade teacher; Debbie Tittle-Diagnostician; Rosemary Wilganowski-Diagnostician; Jaquita Voges-Diagnostician; Matthew Dossey-history/coach junior high; Jeff Early-LLSP Special Education. The motion carried unanimously.

Personnel Resignations/Retirees- Motion by Ms. Lowanda Washington, seconded by Mr. Carman Dingrando, to accept the resignations from Patricia Baker Smith, Barbara Jenkins, Ronnie Hindmand, Robert "Bobby" Moore and retiree Omelia Cox. The motion carried unanimously.

Arthur Douglas - Welcomed new Board member.

Rose Sedillo - Welcomed new Board member.

Keith Alston - Extended condolences to Helen Taylor Sehon in the loss of her mother. Wished Patricia Baker Smith the best of luck. She will be missed. Appreciate volunteers in the mentor program.

Lowanda Washington - Welcomed new Board member. Asked Mrs. Hopkins, HS Principal, to look into the following for next school year-1)not have the prom on Mothers Day weekend; 2) have practice for Baccalaureate Service in the morning so students that work do not have to ask off; 3) take bids on getting a D.J. for prom-the one this year was expensive; 4)in the future improving the football banquet. Heard some complaints.
