MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MARLIN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Administration Building 7:00 P.M.
January 20, 2004
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by President, Lowanda Washington, at 7:00 P.M.
Invocation was given by Roger Nutt.
Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and Texas Flag was led by Brittany
Coleman, Ebony Evans, Chantal Giddings, Tanockia Schultz, Charminque Stance,
Jamella Thomas and Deandria Petty, members of the middle school girls
basketball team.
Roll call: Ms. Lowanda Washington, Mr. Roger Nutt, Mrs. Byrleen Terry, Mr. Terry
Douglas, Mr. David Lawson, Mr. Danny Vickers and Ms. Sonja Washington.
Public Comments/audience participation: None
Recognition to coaches and players - Superintendent
Hopkins asked that we postpone this item till later due to coaches and players
not being able to attend because of a basketball game.
Discussion Item- Athletic Fields - Jeff Bresee,
License Engineer with Hibbs & Todd, gave a presentation on the comparison
of synthetic turf to natural grass. A handout was given to each Board member
and Mr.
Bresee went over four items: maintenance, field usage, player safety, and community
economic impact. Questions were asked by the Board members.
Bill(s) to The Chicken Place -Motion by Mr. Roger Nutt, seconded by Mrs. Byrleen Terry, to approve the bills to The Chicken Place. Voting for: Mr. Roger Nutt, Mrs. Byrleen Terry, Mr. Terry Douglas, Mr. David Lawson, Ms. Lowanda Washington, and Ms. Sonja Washington. Mr. Danny Vickers abstained from voting. The motion passed.
Consent Agenda - Motion by Mr. Danny Vickers, seconded by Mr. Roger Nutt, to approve the consent agenda as presented. The motion carried unanimously. Consent agenda items: minutes of the December 16, 2003 regular meeting and monthly financial report.
Resolution - Safe & Drug Free Grant - Motion by Mr. David Lawson, seconded by Mr. Terry Douglas, to approve the Resolution for the Safe & Drug Free Grant as presented. The motion carried unanimously.
Fire Lane Parking Zone At ES & MS - Motion by Mr. Terry Douglas, seconded by Mr. David Lawson, to approve designated fire lane-parking zone at the elementary school and middle school as presented. Themotion carried unanimously.
Nominee added to Textbook Selection Committee -
Motion by Mr. Roger Nutt, seconded by Ms. Sonja Washington, to approve additional
nominee, Disti Dickerson, to the Textbook Selection Committee. The motion carried
unanimously.
Demolish old MS Gym & Other Buildings - Dale Bohannon, Assistant Superintendent of Business & Operations, addressed the Board on the heath and safety hazards of the old middle school gym and other buildings. Motion by Mr. Roger Nutt, seconded by Ms. Sonja Washington, to publish proposals to have buildings demolished. The motion carried unanimously.
Authorize $120.00 each for Coaches to Purchase Rings - Motion by Mr. Danny Vickers, seconded by Mr. Roger Nutt, to authorize $120.00 each for the coaches listed to purchase rings. Voting for: Mr. Danny Vickers, Mr. Roger Nutt, Mrs. Byrleen Terry, Mr. Terry Douglas, Mr. David Lawson and Ms. Lowanda Washington. Voting against: Ms. Sonja Washington. The motion passed.The following is the list of coaches: Jerry Malone, Bruce Brignac, Shannan Fink, Scott Holloway, Benny Huitt, Billy Johnson, Cassius Johnson, Jamal Lang, Doug Ledbetter, Kevin Morton, Rusty Nail, Chuck Vincent, Casey Wallace, Allen West, JoeWoodard, Michael Yezak and Erin Zipperlen.
Superintendents Report - Michelle Wellhelm,
Intervention Team Specialist, briefed the Board on her November
and December Report. Each Board member was given the reports. She stated the
program is in place and on target. She is seeing positive things happening and
is well pleased.
Asst. Supt. for School Improvement - Jo Ann Garrison, Assistant Superintendent for School Improvement, reported to the Board on: 1)ITBS and 2)Reading First. Board members were given handouts regarding the two mentioned topics.
Asst. Supt. of Business & Operations - Dale Bohannon, Assistant Superintendent of Business & Operations, reported to the Board on: 1)results of the surplus sale and 2)possibly selling buildings on Green Street. A handout was given to each Board member on the results of the surplus sale.
Closed Session - The Board went into Closed Session
at 8:17 P.M.
The Board came out of Closed Session and reconvened to Open Session at 8:56
P.M.
Composite Results of Supt. Evaluation - No action
was taken on this agenda item
Superintendent Contract Extension - Motion by Mr. Danny Vickers, seconded by Mrs. Byrleen Terry, to extend the contract of Superintendent Hopkins for one year at the present salary. The motion carried unanimously.
Personnel Employment - Motion by Mrs. Byrleen Terry,
seconded by Mr. Terry Douglas, to employ the following
for the 2003-04 school year: Shelley Salsiccia-ES/MS-PE/coach and Mary Marek-ESL
teacher, elementary school. The motion carried unanimously.

Terry Douglas Thanked everyone for the gifts and students who wrote letters
to each Board member.
Danny Vickers Dittoed the above comments and also commented on the pictures
in the Texas Basketball Magazine of some of the players on the Marlin Basketball
team. Suggested the library at high school purchase an issue of the magazine
so the players could see the pictures.
Roger Nutt Congratulations to the coaches and football team for a fantastic
year. Commended Jo Ann Garrison on the test results.
Lowanda Washington Thanked everyone for the gifts. Also thanked the MISD staff for their hard work.
January is Board Appreciation Month. Each campus and the administration building gave the Board members appreciation gifts. Students in Joe Woodards 8th grade health class wrote letters to the Board members.
