MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

MARLIN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

Marlin Middle School Cafeteria  6:00 p.m.

April 21, 2009

Call to Order - Board President, Lowanda Sias called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m.

Moment of silence was observed. Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Texas Flag was led by members of the Marlin Middle School National Junior Honor Society                         

Roll Call - Roger Nutt, Danny Vickers, Tania Baker, Sonja Washington, Lowanda Sias, David Lawson, and Steve Johnson. A quorum was established for the meeting

Public Comments/Audience Participation - None

Discussion Item - Ruth Meggs and Pam Ziolkowski, Campus Intervention Team External Members representing Marlin High School and Marlin Middle School presented a power point presentation defining The Campus Improvement Team and A Systems Approach to School Improvement. The presentation informed the trustees of requirements of the Campus Improvement Team from the State to ensure campus improvement and monitoring of campus progress. The team discussed strategies currently being used on each campus and emphasized the importance of the School Improvement Plan, Progress Reports, Benchmark Testing, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, Leadership, and Professional Development. Questions were asked and comments were made by the Board. Copies of the School Improvement Plans (SIP), Progress Reports, and Assessments that have been sent to TEA for both campuses were given to the Board as handouts for review.

Consent Agenda - Motion made by Danny Vickers, seconded by Tania Baker to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting held March 24, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. and the Monthly Financial Report. Motion carried unanimously.

Budget Amendment(s) - Motion made by Sonja Washington, seconded by David Lawson to approve budget amendments as presented. Motion carried unanimously.

Certification Of Unopposed  Candidates - Motion made by Sonja Washington, seconded by David Lawson to approve Certification of Unopposed Candidates for the May 9, 2009 election. Motion carried unanimously.

Order of  Cancellation and Unopposed  Candidates Elected - Motion made by Sonja Washington, seconded by David Lawson to approve Order of Cancellation of the May 9, 2009 election and Unopposed Candidates Steve Johnson and Lowanda Sias  elected to their districts. Motion carried unanimously.

Proposed 2009-2010 School Calendar - Motion made by Danny Vickers to table action on the proposed 2009-2010 School Calendar. He recommended scheduling Staff Development Days throughout the calendar year as suggested by the Campus Intervention Team. Motion was seconded by David Lawson. Motion carried unanimously.    

Personnel Matters - Board President, Lowanda Sias announced at 7:22 p.m. that the Board would go into closed session under TexasGovernment Code 551.146 to discuss personnel matters. The Board reconvened into open session at 7:53 p.m.

Superintendents Appraisal, Goals, Directives, Contract, Compensations, etc. -  No action taken.

Recommendation of Employment  for 2009-2010 - No action taken.

Resignation(s)  - The Board recognized the following resignations as received and accepted by Ray Matthews, Superintendent.

Adjournment -  Board President, Lowanda Sias adjourned the meeting at 7:54 p.m.
