BOARD ACTION REPORT

School Board Meeting October 21, 1997

Superintendent Report

*Steve Payne, Facility Manager employed by Marriott, briefed the Board on the Proposed Management Structure. He also introduced Jason Wink, Custodial Manager with Marriott, who will be over the janitorial department at MISD and John Perdue who is a Project Engineer with Marriott.

 

*Superintendent Thornell informed the Board on the recommendation from the School Rebuilding Committee. The committee has had several meetings and recommended the following: 1) to purchase the land adjacent to the ball field at the high school; 2) to configure the new facility as PreK-5; 3) to continue with further study of course offering at the Vocational School.

Next month, Superintendent Thornell will propose names of public adjusters.

 

Consent Agenda

*Motion by Mrs. Billie Jones, seconded by Ms. Rose Sedillo, to approve the consent agenda as presented. Voting for the motion was Mrs. Billie Jones, Ms. Rose Sedillo, Mr. Keith Drews, Ms. Elaine Truett and Mr. Keith Alston. Ms. Lowanda Washington abstained from voting. The motion carried. Consent Agenda items were: agenda, minutes of the September 23 and October 7, 1997 meetings, bills and budget amendment (s).

 

Advertise for Bids Phase I, Renovations at Junior High

*Dennis Dyke, with ABACUS Engineering Inc., presented the Board members with blue prints and briefed the Board on Phase I regarding the renovations at junior high school. Motion by Ms. Lowanda Washington, seconded by Mrs. Billie Jones, to approve to advertise for bid regarding Phase I (renovations at junior high school). The motion carried unanimously.

 

Approve Campus Plans

* Motion by Ms. Rose Sedillo, seconded by Mr. Keith Drews, to approve the Campus Plans for the 1997-98 school year as presented. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Closed Session

*Board approved Letter of Engagement of Walsh, Anderson, Underwood, Schultz & Aldridge P.C. as representation in the Barbara Smith vs. Marlin ISD case.

 

Board Comments

*Lowanda Washington thanked the district for sending flowers to her mother

*Elaine Truett wished board member Ras Dancy a "Speedy Recovery". The rest of the Board members echoed this.
