Bulldogs Upset State Ranked Indians!

The Bulldogs traveled to Alvarado on September 25 to take on the Indians who were ranked third in the state and in a real nail biter they brought home the bacon! A missed extra point by Alvarado proved to be the difference as Marlin prevailed 14-13.

Alvarado scored first and took a 7-0 lead into the locker room at the half but in the third quarter behind the running of DeMarcus Smith and quarterback Jeremy Modkins, the Bulldogs were barking loud at the Indian five-yard line. Two plays later "Mo" Smith took it in and with Brandon Lofton's point after we were all even at 7 a piece.

Alvarado would answer quickly as they drove the length of the field to score again BUT they would failed on the point after. The missed extra point would not only proved to be the difference in the ball game but it gave the bulldogs that extra inspiration to fight back. And that is what they did as Jante Cheeves started it off by taking the ensuing kick off and bring it back to the Marlin 40 yard line. From here it was Modkins racing forty yards to the Indian 10 yard line. And from here it was "Reggie Time" as senior running back would not be denied the end zone and hammered his way to pay dirt to even the score at 13 all. With only 34 seconds remaining in the third period, Loftons extra point was good to make it 14-13 Bulldogs!

The defense then took over. Clifton Hopwood, Cassius Johnson, Dustin Sowders and Roderick Scruggs to name just a few all had BIG plays that stymied the potent Indian offense.

On a third down play bulldogs David Scruggs and Sowders caused an Indian fumble that the bulldogs recovered and the celebration began. Behind the offensive line of Patrick Bailey, Lofton, Will Johnson, Ellis Jackson, Brandon Drews and Bert Tiller the backfield of Modkins and the "Smith Boys" would ground the Indians and the time clock down. And there you have if - the Alvarado crowd was in shock and disbelief as they watched the Marlin bulldogs celebrate and head back to Marlin with the victory. The final score once again Marlin 14 Alvarado 13.

The bulldogs will hit the road once more this Friday, October 2nd as they take on the Goats from Groesbeck.
