Bulldogs "scalp" the Indians!
The Marlin Bulldogs knocked the Alvarado Indians from their state ranking on Friday night at Legion Field with a convincing 29-13 victory.
The bulldogs got on the scoreboard first as quarterback Jeremy Modkins, facing a fourth and five at the Indian 38 yard line, tight roped the left side line all the way to the end zone. The extra point failed but the bulldogs were up 6-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.
The dogs scored again with less than a minute left in the opening period when wide receiver, Desmond Watson took a deflected pass off an Indian defender 22 yards for a touchdown. This scoring pass was set up by an electrifying 75 yard run by tail back Roderick Scruggs. A failed two point conversion left the score at 12 zip bulldogs!
Two miscues by the bulldogs led to Alvarado's first score. An interception and a 15 yard penalty set the Indians up at the Marlin 17 yard line. Two plays later, Brad Bridgewater scored. The two point conversion failed but the lead was cut in half at 12-6 Marlin as both teams headed for half time.
Alvarado would then take the second half kick off and begin their move for a touchdown. Cashan Clark scored on a 32 yard run. the point after was good and the Indians took a "short-lived" lead of 13-12.
Alvarado would not see the end zone again. The Marlin defensive unit began to dominate the rest of the way. Ellis "The Reverend" Jackson caused a fumble setting the Indians back to their own 13. Two plays later "Mo" Smith intercepted a pass and returned it to the 12.
On a second and 18, Scruggs took a screen pass from Modkins and rumbled the distance for a touchdown. A two point conversion on a keeper by Modkins and the dogs moved out in front to stay. Score Marlin 20 Alvarado 13.
In the final period it again was the defense rising to the occasion. Bradon Lofton caused a fumble and then brought down the ball carrier in the end zone for a safety to stretch the lead to 22-13 with just over five minutes to play.
After the punt by Alvarado, the dogs wasted no "mo" time before scoring an insurance touchdown. Running back "Mo" Smith scored from nine yards out, Lofton's point after was good and the bulldogs went on to victory. Final score Marlin 29 Alvarado 13.
The win moves the bulldogs to 3-1 on the year and come Friday night they will host the winless goats from Groesbeck. It will be Parent Night at Legion Field so be sure to come out to the game. It will also be the final tune up for Jerry Malone's bulldogs as next week district begins!
See ya at the game!
