It was Parent Night at Legion Field as the Groesbeck Goats came calling on the Bulldogs and it didn't take long for the Goats to find the end zone.
The bulldogs fumbled the opening kick off and then on their first offensive play, QB Brandon Little found his favorite receiver, Brandon Easterly for a 28 yard scoring pass. Easterly was a name the bulldogs would not soon forget on this night! The point after was good and with only 17 seconds gone by the Goats were up 7-0.
The bulldogs though would fight back. And with just over four minutes remaining in the first period, Demarcus "Mo" Smith took it in from 10 yards out. Brandon Lofton added the point after and we were all knotted up at 7 a piece.
The Goats then began to drive towards the bulldog end zone but were stopped short as Charles "Jock" Johnson intercepted a pass at the Marlin 11 yard line.
The bulldog ground game then began its move. Runs by Derrick Berry, Jeremy Modkins, Roderick Scruggs and Mo Smith brought the ball to the Groesbeck six yard line. From there it was Berry who scored. The point after was blocked but the dogs had the lead at 13-7. This is where the scoring would stop as both teams headed for their lockers.
The bulldogs extended their lead in the 3rd period with Berry scoring his second touchdown of the night from one yard out. Lofton's point after was good to put the bulldogs up 21-7 with ten minutes left in the period.
A Groesbeck fumble set up the next bulldog score. Desmond Watson jarred the ball loose from a goat runner and Mo Smith took the ball to the Groesbeck three yard line. Three plays later it was "Mo" taking it in for the score. Lofton's point after was good and the lead stretched to 28-7.
The bulldogs scored again on their next possession as QB Modkins, facing a 3rd and 11 hit Carlos Bailey on a long pass that brought the ball to the Goat 16. Two plays later Scruggs scored from the one. Lofton again added the point after and the dogs were up 35-7 with three minutes left in the 3rd period.
Groesbeck would not quit. Remember that name Easterly? Well once again QB Little found Easterly in the clear for an 18 yard scoring pass. A successful 2 point conversion made it 35-15 with just over 10 minute to play. Oh by the way, Easterly finished the night with 13 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. (Thank goodness he is a senior!)
The Goats took advantage of a bulldog miscue (fumble) and scored one last time with Little taking it from one yard out. The try for two failed and the score was 35-21 Marlin.
Marlin would score one more time with the ground attack working on the clock - Smith, Berry , Scruggs, Modkins, all running the ball well with Berry scoring his third touchdown of the night from four yards out. The extra point was no good this time but this game belonged to the Bulldogs. Final score 41-21 Bulldogs!
District play starts this Friday as Marlin travels to Robinson. See you at the game!
