Gatesville finally got it done over the Bulldogs. It has been 17 years since the Hornets beat the Marlin team but on their Homecoming night, October 4, behind the running of Senior Derrell Moten and the passing of Lance Autrey the Hornets came away with a 35-14 win.
The Hornets opened the scoring in the first quarter going 67 yards in six plays. Moten scampered 44 yards to the Dawg 16 and two plays later, Gatesville was up 7-0.
Marlin answered with an impressive 10 play 76 yard drive with QB Shaun Henry hitting WR Jante Cheeves on an 19 yard TD pass to cap the drive making it 7-7.
By halftime the Hornets had built a 21-7 lead but in the third quarter the Bulldogs dominated play. The duo of Henry and Cheeves teamed up once more on a 38 yard scoring strike and with Nathan Polsterís extra point kick the score was 21-14.
But the Bulldogs never got any closer.
Gatesville added two more Td's to make the final 35-14.
It doesnít get any easier for the Bulldogs this Friday night as their archrival the La Vega Pirates come to town. La Vega stands at a surprising 0-2 in district and one more loss could all but eliminate them from contention. Look for a real "Dogfight" in this one.
