A packed stadium at Legion Field watched the Marlin Bulldogs move to a perfect 5-0 in district with a 33-0 shutout over the Lorena Leopards on Friday, November 5.

Marlin dominated Lorena throughout the game. The offense racked up 25 first downs while the dogs dominating defense held the Leopards to only one first down and 19 total yards on offense.

The scoring got started on Marlin's first possession. Runs by DeMarcus Smith and Roderick Scruggs moved the ball to the Leopard forty. From there, quarterback Jeremy Modkins hit wide receiver Desmond Watson for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The point after was no good and the dogs were up 6-0.

The dogs would score again on their next possession as Modkins ran 58 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was no good but the dogs were up 12-0 with 6:50 still left in the first quarter.

Possession number three for the dogs began at their own 31 yard line. On first and ten, Mo Smith ran for 14 yards. On a third and four, Derrick Berry took it to the Lorena 45 yard line. Then it was Mo again to the 29. Three plays later the dogs were barking inside the one. Modkins took it in from there and Brandon Lofton added the point after to make it Marlin 19-0. This is all the scoring that would take place in the first half as both teams headed for their lockers.

The dogs extended their lead on their first possession of the third quarter as Mo Smith scored from the one. Lofton added the point after to make it 26 zip.

The icing of the cake came with nine minutes left in the game. A punt into the wind from the Lorena six yard line carried only ten yards and the dogs set up shop at the Leopard 16. From there Modkins hit Davison Nutt on a cross pattern for a score, Lofton added the point after and the final score was 33-0.

The win by Marlin and Gatesville beating Robinson knocked the Leopards from the playoffs for the second year in a row. Looking at the playoff picture - Marlin will take on Teague, Robinson will play Fairfield and Gatesville will face Mexia in first round action.

The Teague game will be Saturday, November 13 at A&M Consolidated. Game time 7:00 p.m..
