The Marlin bulldogs kept the McGregor bulldogs in the doghouse all night long as they came home with a 47-0 whipping to move to a perfect 5-0 in district and they now sit all alone at the top of the heap!
Marlin scored on its first five possessions. (4 touchdowns alone in the first quarter) In their opening drive (10 plays), alternating runs between Roderick Scruggs and DeMarcus "Mo" Smith it was Smith scoring from the one. The extra point was wide but the bulldogs from Marlin were up 6-0.
Drive number two started at the Marlin 42 yard line. This time on a first and ten, quarterback, Jeremy Modkins hit wide receiver, Desmond Watson at the McGregor 30, who then raced to the end zone untouched to make it 12-0. Derrick Berry ran it in for a two point conversion to make it 14-0.
Drive number three started at the Marlin 39. After an incomplete pass on first down, Modkins pitched left to "Mo" who went the distance and with Brandon Lofton's point after the score was 21-0.
Drive number four started in McGregor territory at the 42. On the last play of the first quarter, Modkins found Watson again - open at the five. From there Watson high stepped into the end zone. Point after was no good but Marlin was up 27-0 as the first quarter came to an end.
Marlin's fifth score came on their first possession of the second quarter. Starting on their own 45, runs by Modkins, Smith, Scruggs and Berry moved the ball to the McGregor five where Modkins would score to make it 33-0 as both teams headed to half time.
On Marlin's second possession of the third quarter it was time to score again. Starting at their own 20 yard line, once more the running game kicked into gear. The offensive line just plain dominated McGregor and the running back tantrum of Berry and Smith was just too much. Berry scored from five yards out and get this - "Mo" kicked the extra point to make it 40-0. (Another means for Mo to score.)
The final scoring drive of the night would be led by back-up quarterback Andre Simms and a new trio of backs - Triten Holt, Alvin Hall and Tremain Davis. The score came on a three yard keeper by Simms and yes, "Mo" added the extra point to make the final 47-0 Marlin.
Things will be tougher this week as the 4-1 Lorena Leopards come to Legion Field. Lorena remembers quite well what happened last year as Marlin defeated the Leopards in overtime and eliminated them from making the playoffs.
Should be a good one. See ya at the game!
