The Eagle Never Left The Ground

The country boys from Marlin took their game to the BIG city of Dallas and put a whupping on the Eagles of Wilmer Hutchins at the tune of 39-7.

The first half saw the Marlin D hold Wilmer Hutchins to only four first downs and zero points on the board while the Eagle D could not stop the Marlin offense from lighting up the board.

On the bulldogs first possession, it was running back Mo Smith carrying eight stright times with the last carry a ten yard run for a touchdown. Mo added the point after to give the dogs an early lead at 7-0.

The Marlin D would score the next touchdown. The D, as in Desmond (Watson), picked up a fumble after Materrial (Red) Richardson forced the Eagle receiver to cough up the ball with a big hit, and Watson goes 68 yards for a touchdown. PAT was no good but the dogs were up 13-0.

The defense again set up Marlin's next touchdown. A fumble recovery at the Eagle 34 gave the offense the ball and on a third and seven, QB Thaddeus Freeman found TE Davison Nutt across the middle for a 32 yard completion down to the Eagle two. From there Mo took it in for his second TD of the night. PAT by Mo was good to make it 20 - 0 dogs.

The Eagles tried a fake punt on fourth down on their next possession but it fooled no one and the dogs were barking once again at the Eagle twenty-five.

On second down, running back Derrick Berry took off on a sweep right all the way to the goal line where he was hit, knocking the ball loose but "Johnny on the spot," Desmond Watson recovered in the back of the end zone for the TD. The PAT went wide left but the dog lead was extended to 26-0 with only 42 seconds remaining in the half.

In the second half, the Eagles kicked off - short and the dogs were in business starting at their own 41. Mo carried to midfield and then Freeman found Watson for a 50 yard scoring toss to make it 32 -0. (The PAT was no good)

Again the Marlin Defense would figure in their next score as defensive lineman, Reggie Norman fell on an Eagle fumble at the WH 35. On second down, QB Freeman found a wide open Carlos Bailey on the Eagle 15 for a 45 yard scoring pass. Smith's PAT was good and the dogs were crusing 39-0.

The Eagles finally got on the board with 1:56 remaining in the game as Le'Neric Edwards (their leading rusher with 17 yards on 6 carries) scored from one yard out.

On the night Mo carried 16 times for 112 yards and 2 TD's. Freeman threw for 160 yards hitting 6 of nine passes and 2 TD's. Desmond Watson accounted for 166 total yards and three TD's.

So that does the pre-district season for the dogs. Finishing at 2-3 they now have a week off before opening district play at home vs. the undefeated Blackcats from Mexia on Friday the 13th. It may be an unlucky day for some but look for the bulldogs to be back with senior QB, Jeremy Modkins ready to go!
