33-21 Victory Over Rockdale Gives 'Dawgs

Area Championship!

The dogs will continue deeper into the playoffs as they downed the Rockdale Tigers 33-21 at Pflugerville on November 20th.

Marlin scored first on their second possession of the game going 75 yards in three plays. The big play of the "drive" was a 59-yard scamper by junior quarterback, Jeremy Modkins to the Rockdale 15. DeMarcus "Mo" Smith then took it to the one and Modkins score from there. Brandon Lofton added the extra point to make it 7-0.

Marlin scored again on their next possession. This would be a two play 92 yard drive capped by "Mo" Smith's 73 yard run to pay dirt. Lofton's point after was good to move the dogs in front 14-0.

Rockdale finally got on the scoreboard with 8:30 left before half on a 22-yard field goal to make it 14-3.

But the dogs barked back. "Mo" scored his second TD to make it 20-3 at the half.

The third quarter saw the Tigers come out growling big time! On their first possession, running back Winters scored on a 69-yard run, despite being hit several times behind the yard of scrimmage! This score made it 20-9.

Then Rockdale scored on an 85-yard pass play to cut the lead to 20-15. And then they took the lead at 21-20 on yet another pass to start the final period! Oh the crowd was in shock! 18 unanswered points to start the second half. Was the season about to end for the bulldogs?

With the season in jeopardy the Marlin defense rose to the occasion as they snuffed any future threat to the end zone by the Tigers. Enough already!

The offense now had to deliver. Facing a third and twelve the dogs needed a BIG play to keep their playoff hopes alive. And that they got as Modkins found TE Davison Nutt in the clear down the left side line for a 60 yard gainer down to the Rockdale six. >From there the offensive line blew the Tigers away as Modkins scored to make it 26-21 with just under six minutes to play.

On the ensuing kickoff, Lofton booted the ball into the end zone and prevented any run back by the Tigers. After QB Bassler moved his team to their 31, he faced a big 3rd down play. Attempting a pass, the ball was deflected and Danny Sadler lunged in the air to pick the ball off before it hit the ground! INTERCEPTION DOGS!

With the dogs having possession of the ball at the Rockdale 36 and control of the clock they turned to BIG #33. Roderick Scruggs carried the ball on four consecutive times. The last carry covered 18 yards to the END ZONE!! Lofton added the point after to make it 33-21 and the dogs were headed to the Regional playoffs!

In the regionals Marlin will take on last year's state champions, the Newton Eagles. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 26 at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville.

See ya at the game!
