The bulldogs took their perfect 3-0 district mark to Fairfield on November 3, knowing that a victory over the Eagles would sew up at least a share for the district title in 19-3A ball and they did just that coming away with yet another shutout victory - this time by a score of 38-0. The shut out was their third in a row and they now have outscored their opponent 166-7 in district play. And now for a recap of the game.....
The dogs first score of the game came on their second possession. Starting at the Eagle 49 they needed only two plays. First it was Derrick Berry for 14 yards to the 35 and then it was Mo Smith the rest of the way for the touchdown. PAT was blocked and with 7:48 left in the first quarter, the score was Marlin 6-0.
The dogs second score was set up by a fumble recovery by Adrain Green at the Eagle 26. On Marlin's first play from scrimmage, Mo ran 26 yards for an apparent touchdown but a block in the back nullified the score. Then on third down, Berry took a pitch from Modkins, fumbled the ball, picked it up and ran 17-yards for his first touchdown of the night. The try for two fell short and the score was 12-0 Marlin.
The bulldog defense once again held the Eagles to three and out and back on the field came the offense.
Beginning at their own 35 they moved down field with ease on runs by Berry, Modkins and Smith. Then Modkins hit WR Desmond Watson with a 33-yard pass to the Eagle 13. From there Modkins ran it in - two point conversion was no good and the dogs moved out to a 18-0 lead.
Fairfield would later recover a Marlin fumble at their own 42 but the dog defense forced yet another three and out. On fourth down the Eagles punted to the dangerous return man - Watson. You just knew he was do to break one and he did. Taking the ball in at his own 25, Watson began darting in and out and around would be tacklers and 75 yards later - TOUCHDOWN! Smith kicked the point after to make it 25-0 at the half.
The second half would be a "Berry" good half for the dogs. With 3:08 left in the third, Derrick Berry scored his second TD of the night from 17 yards out. James Johnson added the point after and the lead grew to 32-0.
Berry saved his best run for his last touchdown as he scored on a 60 yard run with 4:38 remaining in the game to make the final score Marlin 38 and Fairfield 0.
On the night Berry carried 13 times for 134 yards and scored three touchdowns. Mo accounted for 80 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown while Watson had 153 all purpose yards and one TD.
Jimmy Quinn led the defense with 18 tackles, with Watson and Mark Jimenez getting eleven each. Reggie Norman recovered a fumble giving him three on the year to lead the team in that category.
So now the dogs have a share of the pie and come this Friday night, November 10 at Legion Field, they go for the whole pie as they host the Groesbeck Goats on "Parent Night."
See ya' at the game!
