DOGS DOMINATE IN SHUTOUT
OVER PANTHERS
31-0

Total domination by the Marlin Bulldogs both on offense and defense led to an easy victory over the previously unbeaten Mart Panthers on Friday night at Legion Field.

In need of a win, the Bulldogs didn't disappoint the hometown crowd as they rolled up nearly 400 total yards on offense while the mighty "D" held the Panthers to just 49 total yards. (Nine rushing and 40 through the air).

Scoring in this one started early. Red Richardson returned the opening kickoff 25-yards to set up the offense at the 35. Quarterback, Jeremy Sanders ran for 25 yards on the first offensive play and on the very next play, Mark Jimenez weaved his way in and around the Panther defense for 40 yards and a touchdown. Chris Stewart added the point after to make it 7-0. Two plays in thirty seconds and a score!

On the Panthers first offensive series they committed a turnover that the Dogs turned into their second score. Defensive lineman, Jermany Griffin pounced on a Panther fumble at the Mart 35. Ten plays later it was Jimenez again. This time from three yards out for the score. Stewart again was good on the point after and the Dogs were rolling at 14-0 with still 5:58 to play in the first quarter.

The Dogs added one more score before halftime as Red scored from 10 yards out with 4:40 to play. Stewart added his third point after to make it 21-zip at the half.
First half stats showed the Dogs with 259 total yards, 13 first downs while the Panthers managed only 2 first downs and 49 total yards. Marlin ran 40 plays to Marts 16.

The second half was more of the same - Bulldog O scoring and Bulldog D shutting down the Panthers cold. With 6:30 left in the third, Red scored his second touchdown of the night on a 48-yard run. Stewart was true for the fourth time to make it a 28-0 ball game. This drive took only three plays!

The Panthers could not get anything going. They had the ball only twice in the third quarter and turned it over both times on downs.

Marlin's final scoring drive started with 2:05 left in the third quarter. It took 10 plays on this drive and with 8:47 left in the game, Luis Vasquez connected on a 25-yard field goal to make the final 31-0.

(One special note on the game - Two freshmen players got to see their first varsity action. Ryan Merryman played center for the entire second half as starting center, Dale Robertson didn't return due to an elbow injury. And running back Michael Chane carried the ball one time for nine yards.)

Things will get a little tougher this week for the Bulldogs as they travel to take on another team of Bulldogs - BURNET. Burnet is the number one team in the state in class 3-A ball. Last year the Marlin team took Burnet to overtime before losing by one point 26-27. Should be another exciting ball game!

The Dogs won't return home again until homecoming on October 24 when they face Caldwell.
