PAYBACK DROPS DOGS TO 0-4
The big city boys from Wilmer Hutchins must have remembered last year when the dogs went to Dallas to visit and came home with a 39-7 win. This year the table turned as the Eagles came to the country and put a whippin' on the dogs by a tune of 32-6 as Eagle quarterback Jarreau Grant and running back Len'eric Edwards combined for five touchdowns and 230 yards.
The game was scoreless until 2:05 remained in the first quarter. The Eagles were on the move in bulldog territory when they faced a fourth and long. They went for it and bulldog defensive back Carlos Bailey picked off a Grant pass at the seven. Trying to find some running room, Bailey was stripped of the ball - the Eagles recovered and had first and goal at the two. From there Edwards took it in to make it 6-0 Eagles.
As we moved to the second quarter, the Eagles were again on the move behind the running of Grant and Edwards. With 8:05 remaining in the second quarter, Edwards scored his second touchdown of the night from 11-yards out. The two point conversion was good to make it 14-0.
Then with 4:27 remaining in the half, another bulldog turnover gave the ball back to the eagles deep in bulldog territory. From 15-yards out Grant scored and both teams headed to their lockers at the half with the eagles flying high with a 20-0 lead.
The half-time performance was highlighted as the Marlin Middle School band joined the high school band and played two songs for the Marlin faithful.
Looking at the first half stats - the bulldogs managed only four first downs and a total of 94 yards as compared to the eagles who had 13 first downs and 260 yards on offense. What hurt the dogs the most were the two fumbles in their own territory that the Eagles converted into 14 points.
In the third quarter the Wilmer Hutchins defense came out pumped as they held the dogs offense to zero first downs. The eagle offense would score again with 8:24 remaining in the third as Edwards scored his third TD from 10-yards out. The two-point conversion was no good but the score stood at 26 zip Eagles.
In the final quarter it was Grant scoring his second touchdown of the night from five yards out to make it 32-0.
Finally with only 2:32 showing on the clock, the bulldogs found the end zone. Quarterback Thaddeus Freeman found a wide-open Wade McIntosh down the far sideline for a 22-yard touchdown. The try for two was no good and the final score was Wilmer Hutchins 32 and Marlin 6.
So the bulldogs find themselves 0-4 on the year and the road doesn't get any easier. On Friday, October 5 the team will head to Crockett to take on the state ranked bulldogs, a team our bulldogs beat 40-6 last year in the playoffs.
