Bulldogs take "Sting" out of Hornets

The Bulldogs didn't let their hometown fans down on "Parents Night " at Legion Field on October 16, as they shout out the Gatesville Hornets 28-0 to move to 1-1 in district play.

Marlin wasted no time in scoring as they took the opening kick-off and marched easily down the field, needing only three plays to score as DeMarcus Smith took it in from one yard out. Nathan Polster added the point after to make it 7-0 bulldogs.

It was three and out for the Hornets as the Marlin D "swarmed" all over the Hornets. The bulldogs second drive started at their own twenty and behind the running of the "Smith Boys" the dogs were barking once again at the Hornets nest! But here the drive did stall as Gatesville did hold at the goal line.

The Marlin D again would rise to the top as Clifton Hopwood threw the QB for an eleven yard loss and the Hornets had to punt. From here it wasn't long before Reggie Smith scored on a fifteen yard run; Polster added the point after to make it 14-0.

Marlin's next possession was highlight by a passing strike from Modkins to Desmond Watson for 18 yards that put the bulldogs in the "red zone" once again. Seven plays later, DeMarcus Smith scored his second TD of the night an with Polster's point after, the score was 21-0 as both teams headed for the lockers.

There was only one score in the second half by the bulldogs as they took their first possession of the third quarter and behind the running of the "Smith Boys" the dogs were barking once more at the Hornet 16 yard line. Reggie Smith scored from here on a trap play up the middle ; Polster's point after was good to make it 28-0 and that's where the scoring would end. The misery was over for the Hornets.

For the night, quarterback, Jeremy Modkins was 2 of 9 for 36 yards in passing. (Davison Nutt for 19 yards and Desmond Watson for 17 yards.) Leading rushers for the dogs were DeMarcus Smith - 176 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns and Reggie Smith, 103 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.

This week the bulldogs travel to Cameron to take on the Yoemen. Both teams sit at 1-1 in district and the bulldogs need a win to stay one game behind the Robinson Rockets in the district chase.
