The Marlin Bulldogs opened their '97 football season with a very impressive showing as they shutout the Mexia Blackcats 14-0.

The offense was led by senior, Cecil "Boo" Kelly who scored both Bulldog touchdowns. His first score came at the start of the second quarter as he showed dazzling speed and darting moves, scooting 44 yards to paydirt! Nathan Polster added the extra point and the "Dawgs were up 7-0.

The Bulldog second score came when quarterback Shaun Henry hooked up with Kelly for a 30 yard score. Once more Polster added the point after making the score 14-0 Bulldogs!

The second half started off with an electrifying kick off return by - you guessed it - CECIL KELLY. Kelly hit the middle and then found an opening on the right side and dashed 62 yards before being tackled. The Blackcat defense stiffened as the Bulldogs could get no closer.

On the night Kelly finished with 243 all purpose yards.

Talking about defense. Let's not forget the 'Dawg D." The Bulldog defense led by Tim Scott, Rodrick Roddy, Donald Benjamin and freshman Jeremy Modkins held the Mexia team to a total of 88 yards (30 on the ground and 58 thru the air)
