Cat and Dog Fight
Is
ALL DOGS!

Senior WideOut Benny Jones had a half that any receiver would have liked for the whole game! Jones caught five passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns as Marlin defeated Mexia by a score of 54-19 to open district play for 2005.

It was homecoming at Blackcat Field in Mexia this past Friday night as District play got underway around the Waco area. And if one was to look at the second half first – where Mexia outscored the Bulldogs 19-14 one might think this one was really close. BUT it was the first half that made the difference as the combination of Sanders to Jones scorched the Blackcat secondary for 216 yards passing and FOUR touchdowns. It was like Benny and Jeremy were just playing run and catch all night long as the Dogs built a 40-0 halftime lead and went on to a convincing 54-19 rout of the Mexia Blackcats.
The Bulldogs started their onslaught of scoring very early. After a Blackcat turnover the Dogs found the end zone on a four yard run by QB Jeremy Sanders with 10:42 left in the opening period. The point after by the dog’s new kicker, Denario Alexander was good but a penalty nullified the point. On his second try he missed and the score was 6-0 Dogs as the Bulldog fans were still coming in the gate.
The Blackcats mounted a short drive of their own but came up short as Victor Cardenas’ field goal try missed.
Back came the dogs as they went eight plays before Sanders hit Jones for his first of four touchdowns on the night with a 2o yard toss. Sanders also found Jones for the two point conversion to make it 14-0 as we headed to quarter number two.
The “Dynamic Duo” teamed up again as Sanders finds Jones for a 40-yard touchdown with 10:52 left in the half. PAT was no good but the lead grew to 20-0.
And a third time it was Sanders to Jones. This one covered 32 yards and with another 2 point conversion pass (Sanders to Alexander) the score was 28 zip.
The Sanders to Jones combination was not done yet. After the dogs recovered a Blackcat fumble, Sanders wasted no time in going to his favorite target one more time. This one covered 34 yards and the lead was 40 -0.
In the first half alone Sanders was eight of nine passing for 243 yards and four touchdowns – ALL to Benny Jones who had five catches for 216 yards all in the first half folks ---AMAZING !
So what other exciting thing could the Dogs still have in store before half? How about a punt return for a touchdown? With 3:39 to play before halftime, senior Kenny Evans had the crowd standing as he puts “shake and bake” moves on to defenders and scoots 31 yards for a touchdown to make it 40 – 0 at the half.

In the second half the Blackcats made some adjustments. Junior running back Ed Adams took over at quarterback and gave the Mexia backers something to cheer about. Down 40 to nothing some fans had gone home but Adams had a good second half. He rushed for 52 yards and one touchdown while throwing for another 46 yards and one touchdown to at least get the ‘Kats on the scoreboard. Both these touchdowns came in the third quarter while the Blackcat defense held the Dogs scoreless.
The final quarter saw Sanders go up top one more time. This time he would find Evans for a 36-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good but the score moved to 46-12 Bulldogs with 9:22 to play in the game.
Mexia would find the end zone one last time as RB Omar Lara scored from five yards out to make it 46-19.
But Sanders knew he had one more touchdown he had to throw. You see it’s really not the “Dynamic Duo” it’s the Three Amigos – Jones had caught four touchdowns, Evans had caught one but what about the third Amigo- Alexander? No problem folks. With 4:35 remaining in the game Sanders hit “D” from 21 yards out to close out the touchdowns. Sanders ran it in for the two point conversion to make the final Dogs 54 Blackcats 19.
On the night Sanders was 12/14 passing for 330 yards and SIX touchdowns! On a quiet note Travis Miller was impressive in the running game gaining 93 yards on only five carries. The Dog defense was led by #23 Jonathan “Tom Tom” Thomas who intercepted a Blackcat pass to seal the victory late in the game.

Its homecoming this week in Marlin and the dogs will entertain the Eagles of Fairfield this Friday night at Legion Field. The Eagles knocked Groesbeck from the unbeaten ranks this past Friday night with a 17-7 win at Fairfield. The 2005 Marlin ISD homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime. See you at the game.
