Dogs Open District Play With BIG Win Over The Blackcats

The talk before the game was whoever wins the Marlin/Mexia game would be favored to win the district. That being said, the dogs should be on their way to their second year in a row as district champions as they defeated the Blackcats in a hard fought defensive game by a score of 14-6.

The game was very close heading to the final quarter with the dogs holding a slim one point lead at 7-6. With 6:27 remaining in the game, sophomore, D'Nerian Wrighter raced into the end zone from 17 yards out to cement the victory for the dogs.

It was also Wrighter that put the dogs on the score board first with a one yard run at the 6:48 mark in the second quarter. Carlos Bailey added both points after the touchdowns to account for the other two points.

The Blackcats' only score came with 2:03 remaining in the half as QB Braxton Harris hit Lance Story for a three yard touchdown. The Blackcats missed the extra point, leaving the dogs up 7-6 at the half.

That slim one point lead held up until Wrighter's 17 yard run in the final quarter. Setting up Wrighter's first touchdown was a 70 yard pass/run from QB Thaddeus Freeman to WR Carlos Bailey down to the Blackcat five yard line. His second touchdown was set up by a 50 yard run from tailback Alvin Hall.

Hall led the dog offense with 126 yards rushing on only nine carries. The defense was led by Braxton Hill (14 tackles) and D'Nerian Wrighter (13 tackles). Freeman and Red Richardson each had an interception for the dogs.

So the dogs sit atop of the heap in a three way tie with Teague and Groesbreck. Next up will be homecoming this Friday night as the Robinson Rockets come to town. Elsewhere in the district it will be Teague at Mexia and Groesbeck at Fairfield.

DEFENSE was the name of the game against Mexia on October 12, 2001. Mark Jimenez (#1) and Greg Dukes (#21) move in to assist on the tackle of the Mexia ball carrier.
