Panthers A Little Too Much For The Bulldogs

The Bulldogs traveled to Panther Stadium to take on Midway on Friday, September 15 and in a thrilling ball game, they came up short as Midway won 27-22.

Midway got on the board first as they took the opening kick off and 18 plays later, RB B.J. Head rain it in from three yards out. The PAT was good and the Panthers were up 7-0.

The Bulldogs would answer back as they took only eight plays on the next kick off, going 88 yards behind the running of Moe Smith, Derrick Berry and Jeremy Modkins. A three yard run by Smith made it 7-6 Panthers. On the PAT, Midway was assessed a penalty for roughing the kicker and the bulldogs then went for two with Smith scoring to give the Bulldogs a one point lead at 8-7.

Midway came right back. Starting at their own 36 yard line they took only seven plays as QB Brett Stewart hit his favorite receiver, Shane Padgett on play seven for a 34 yard scoring toss. PAT by Matt Czimskey was good and the Panthers moved back in from 14-8.

A turnover by the bulldogs on the ensuing kick off gave the ball back to the Panthers who wasted no time in scoring once again with backup QB Czimskey scoring from one yard out. PAT was good and Midway extended their lead to 20-8 at the half.

On the bulldogs second possession of the third quarter they began a drive that started at their own 28. A pass to Desmond Watson and runs by Berry and Smith moved the ball to the 49. On a third and ten, QB Modkins kept the ball around the right side and picked up 29 yards to the Panther 28. Smith scored on the next play but an illegal block nullified the run and the ball was placed at the 25. On the very next play, Modkins found his TE Davison Nutt across the middle, all alone, who caught the ball in stride and took it to the end zone. Berry ran it in for the two point conversion and the dogs drew close at 16-20.

The Panthers would again answer. A 77-yard drive mixed with the running of BJ Head and the passing of Stewart culminated with a 23-yard scoring pass from Stewart to Padgett for a TD. PAT was good and with 10:16 left in the final period the Panthers were up 27-16.

The dogs were determined to stay with the Panthers. From their own 28 yard line, Modkins put some razzle dazzle into his next run. He scrambled right then reversed his field running left down the sideline for 54 yards before being pushed out of bounds. Unfortunately, Modkins grabbed his hamstring when he was pushed and there was a hush from the bulldog faithful. Modkins would be carted to the bulldog sideline where coaches would work on the injury.

Thaddeus Freeman came it at QB and led the dogs the final 17 yards to pay dirt with Smith scoring his second touchdown of the night from one yard out. The two point conversion was no good but the dogs narrowed the lead to 22-27. This is where the game would end, score wise but the dogs did get one more chance. The Panthers faced a fourth and one from their own 39 with just under a minute to go and chose to go for it. BJ Head slipped in the backfield and was downed and the dogs took over with fifty three seconds to play. But three incomplete passes and a fourth down pass from Freeman to Watson that netted only nine yards gave the ball back to Midway, who then ran out the clock. FINAL SCORE - Midway 27 and Marlin 22.

Next up - a Thursday night tilt at the new Waco ISD stadium against last years state champions in 2A - another group of PANTHERS from Mart.

Game time is 7:30. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.. A huge crowd is expected so get there early. It should be a great game.
