Rockets Grounded At Legion Field
The football games started on Thursday night as homecoming week activities were going full swing. At Legion Field in the first game it was the 7th grade B Team taking on the Rockets from Robinson. The game ended in a 0-0 tie but the pups got real close as the first half ended when Broderick Lowe was stopped inside the one as the gun sounded to end the half. Having a great game defensively for the bull pups was Joshua White with 11 tackles (2 for losses).
The 7th grade A team remained undefeated on the year as they cruised to a 34 - 6 win over the Rockets. Accounting for the bull pup scoring were: Bryan Parr with three touchdowns and two 2 point conversions, Nathan Ward on a pass from Darrell Manigo and Matthew Bailey on a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.
The 8th grade B team won by a score of 8-6. Vincent Hawkins scored the lone touchdown for the dogs and Joseph Dingrando stuffed the Rocket ball carrier on a two-point conversion try that would have tied the game and instead preserved the win.
And finally the 8th grade A team took to the field as the high school bonfire was set in the background. The bull pups found themselves down 0-12 but mounted a comeback as Benny Jones and Kevin Diles each scored a touchdown. The difference in the game was a two-point conversion run by Jazz Thomas as the 8th grade team won the game 14-12.
Moving onto the JV squad. They took their game to Robinson and they also came away with a victory. Jermarcus Hartsfield hit Jameus Hartsfield with a 23-yard scoring pass and then Dedrick Lewis intercepted a Rocket pass and ran it back 77 yards for a touchdown to give the bulldogs an early 12-0 lead. Robinson came back before the half on a two-yard run, the point after was good to make it 12-7 at the half. In the third quarter it was Jermarcus Hartsfield scoring from 8 yards out to make it 18-7. Robinson scored once more and then bulldog Desmond Williams intercepted a pass with less than two minutes to go in the game to seal the victory.
Turning to varsity action on Friday night at Legion Field:
The bulldogs put a "whoopin" on the winless Rockets by a score of 53-14 and moved to 2-0 in district, tied for first place with the Groesbeck Goats who won a thriller at Fairfield by a score of 44-32.
The bulldog rushing game was in high gear as they gained over 400 yards on the ground. Leading the way was Alvin Hall with 94 yards while LaKendrick Washington chipped in with 70 yards on 7 carries including a 15-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The dogs started their scoring at the 7:55 mark in the first quarter as QB Thaddeus Freeman put the moves on for a 40-yard run to pay dirt. Carlos Bailey added his first of six extra points to make it 7-0 dogs.
Prior to the start of the second quarter the band beau and band sweetheart were announced. This year's Band Beau is Kevin Haak and the Band Sweetheart is Amanda Roberts.
With 7:01 remaining in the second quarter, freshman Uriah Smith (Little Mo) scored on a 5-yard run that was set up by a 35-yard bruising run by Hall. Wayne McIntosh added the two-point conversion to make it 15-0.
Smith added his second touchdown of the night just before halftime on an 8-yard run. Bailey's point after was good and the dogs went to their lockers with a 22-0 lead.
After both bands performed at halftime, it was time to crown the 2001 Homecoming Queen - Alecia Ward (pictured) was announced the queen for this year. Her father, Jeff Ward, escorted her.
The third quarter was "Red" time. As in Materrial Richardson. To start the second half, Red took the kickoff and put on some spectacular moves before racing 49 yards to the Rocket 11 yard line. From there Freeman scored and Bailey added the point after to make it 29-0. Red was just getting started. After forcing the Rockets to punt (28 yards) the dogs set up shop at their own 40-yard line. On the very first play, Red took a pitch from Freeman and was gone - just like that 60 yards, blazing speed and a touchdown. Bailey again added the point after to make it 36-0.
The Rockets finally found the end zone with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter as Brandon Caserez scored from 14 yards out. The point after was good to make the score 36-7.
The dogs answered right back as Richardson took the ensuing kickoff at his own 25 yard line and with the crowd standing to watch the heroics off he went -75 yards for his second touchdown of the night! Bailey's point after was good to make it 43-7.
Next dog to find the end zone - #32, Lakendrick Washington from 15 yards out. Once more Bailey's point after was good and the dogs were cruising to victory at 50-7.
The dogs final score came by means of something the fans haven't seen in a while - A field goal! Yes a field goal as Bailey connected from 28 yards out to make it 53-7. Bailey finished the night with nine points off his right foot! (Nearly outscoring the entire Rocket team)
The Rockets added one more score with 1:09 remaining in the game as Daniel Obenoskey caught a 28-yard pass from TJ Sepulveda. The point after was good - but the damage had already been don - Final Bulldogs 53 Rockets 14.
So it's off to visit the Lions from Teague this Friday night with kick off scheduled
for 7:30 pm. Teague fell to Mexia this past Friday night by a score of 39-7.
After Teague the dogs will return to Legion Field to take on the Fairfield Eagles
on November 2nd and then finish district play at Groesbeck on November 9th.
