The 1998 football season opened at Legion Field on September 4 as the Bulldogs posted a 20-7 win over the Tigers from Rockdale.

The 'dawgs scored first as senior running back, Reggie Smith took it in from the one. Nathan Polster added the extra point to make the score 7-0.

The Tigers though would "claw" back and tie the game as tail back Pinky Gates scored from three yards out as both teams headed to their lockers at the half.

In the second half, the "Sophomore Tantrum" of QB Jeremy Modkins and wide receiver, Desmond Watson teamed up on a three yard strike for a touchdown. Polster's point after was good and the Bulldogs were up 14-7.

The dog defense then took over. Lead by seniors Cassius "Bootsy" Johnson and Dustin Sowders the big D held the Tigers to 87 total yards in the second half. Two key interceptions in the fourth quarter silenced any come back the Tigers had on mind. Reggie Smith picked off a batted ball at the Rockdale 45 yard line and then on the first offensive play for the bulldogs Smith busted loose up the middle, shredding would-be Tiger tacklers all the way to the end zone, 45 yards - TD!

The with only three minutes to play and the Tigers threatening once again, bulldog defensive back, Buddy Davis picked off a pass at the Marlin five-yard line. From there the Bulldogs would run out the clock and go 1 up on the season with a final score of 20-7.

On the night, three Bulldog players rushed for over 100 yards. Smith carried 18 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back DeMarcus Smith added 116 yards on 14 carries. And QB Modkins finished the night with 115 yards on 15 carries while hitting on 5-7 passes for 62 yards and one touchdown. That one touchdown via the air was to Watson, who finished the night with three catches for 18 yards.

The Bulldog defense held the Tigers to 163 total yards.
