Put A Tiger In Your Tank?
The Rockdale Tigers couldn't put any Tiger ON the Tank as in Tank Smith of the Marlin Bulldogs. Tank was all over the field for the Marlin Homecoming crowd as he rushed for 138 yards on 15 carries, scored three touchdowns on offense and then came up with two tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense to lead the Bulldogs to a 24-0 shutout over the Tigers as both teams opened district play Friday night.
The "Tank" was full as he opened the night for touchdown #1 with 2:05 remaining in the first quarter. Shedding tacklers left and right Tank scored from 31 yards out and with Daniel Ronquillo splitting the uprights the Dogs were up 7-0. The score would remain 7-0 as the teams went to the lockers at the half.
Highlighting the halftime was the crowning of this years homecoming queen - Kristi Murphy. Prior to the game Antonio Reyes was named Band Beau and Winnette Washington was named Band sweetheart.
The game continued at its sluggish pace in the second half before Tank erupted
and brought the crowd to its feet, with a 48 yard run for his second touchdown.
Ronquillo's extra point was good to make it 14-0 Dogs. This Tank touchdown was
set up after he recovered a Tiger fumble at the Rockdale 46-yard line.
In the final quarter it was "Running Red" (Red Richardson) taking over in the backfield for Tank. Red finished the night with 82 yards rushing and most of those came on the Dogs final scoring drive. Runs of 9, 10, and 10 more yards set up Tanks final touchdown from 2-yards out with 4:36 remaining in the game. The point after by Ronquillo was good to make it 21-0.
The Dogs final score came on a 29-yard field goal by Ronquillo with 1:54 remaining in the game.
The Bulldog defense once again played awesome as they held the Tigers to 125 total yards. The defense caused two fumbles and intercepted three passes. Leading the defense in tackles on the night was John Sadler with fifteen, which gives him a team leading 76 on the year.
Next up for the Bulldogs will be the Troy Trojans who come to town this Friday night. The Trojans won a thriller over Lorena 21-17 coming from behind to score the winning touchdown with under two minutes to play on a 67-yard scoring pass from Chase Sparks to Travis Carroll.
In the other District game it was the Cameron Yoe, erupting in the fourth quarter to silence the upset minded Caldwell Hornets by a final of 35-14. The Hornets were leading this game 14-7 late in the third quarter before the Yoe scored 28 unanswered points.
It's still a little early to say, but some people have already circled November 8 on their calendars. That's the final district game and the Dogs are at Cameron!
Bulldog kickoff this Friday night is set for 7:30
PM.
