The bulldogs opened their 1999 football season against the same team which ended their 1998 season - the Rockdale Tigers, who knocked the 'dawgs out of the playoffs in the second round.

This time, behind a dominating offense led by Roderick Scruggs, the table was turned as the bulldogs prevailed 14-12.

Marlin scored first after Jeremy Modkins recovered a fumble inside the Tiger ten yard line. It only took three plays before Scruggs bulled into the end zone from the one and with Brandon Lofton's extra point the bulldogs were up 7-0.

There would be no more scoring in the game until the third quarter when the bulldog offensive speed took over. A 14 play drive that took just over six minutes culminated with QB Modkins scoring from the one. Lofton added the point after to make it 14-0 bulldogs!

Rockdale though would "claw" back. On a fourth and three Marlin was forced to punt. A high snap over the outstretched hands of bulldog punter, John Humphreys set the Tigers up at the Marlin fifteen as the teams headed to the final period.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Rockdale QB Blade Bassler scored on a 15 yard run. The extra point was wide left and the bulldogs held a 14-6 lead.

The Tigers wasted no time on their next possession as Bassler found Travis Swain streaking clear down the left sideline and hit him with a 61 yard scoring pass. The two point try to tie the game was no good and the bulldogs held on to win the game 14-12.

Outstanding defensive plays were turned in by Brandon Lofton and Danny Sadler while on the offensive side it was "Big Cotton" Brandon Drews paving the way for Scruggs who ended the night with 103 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Next up for the 'dawgs will be the Midway Panthers, who come to Legion Field on September 10.
