Bulldogs Trounce The Trojans

I don't even think "Helen" could have helped Troy in this district match up as the Bulldogs improved their record to 2-0 with a trouncing of the Trojans last Friday night at Legion Field by a score of 63-0.

This game was pretty much over at the end of the first quarter as the dogs scored on every possession to take a 28-0 lead. Sophomore Tank Smith scored three touchdowns and rushed for 97 yards in the first quarter! (Tank finished the night with 112 yards and the three scores on the night to give him 12 touchdowns and 700 yards rushing on the year).

The Dogs wasted no time in setting the tone for this one as they went 64 yards in five plays to score with Tank crossing the goal line from five yards out for the games first score. Daniel Ronquillo (who probably had a sore leg after the game) hit his first of nine extra points to make it 7-0 Dogs with 8:46 remaining in the first quarter. This first touchdown was something special though as the dogs really scored three times! The first two scores were erased by penalties. (Third times a charm!)

On the Bulldogs second possession it was Tank from 14 yards out and with Ronquillo's second point after it was 14-0 still in the first quarter.

On their third possession with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter, Mark Jimenez scored from 10 yards out. Ronquillo added the point after to make it 21-0 and you kind of had a feeling how this one was going to wide up.

The final score of the first quarter came on a 9-yard run by Tank with 33 seconds remaining. Ronquillo's fourth extra point was true and the Dogs were up 28- zip after one quarter!

In the second quarter the dog lead was extended to 35-0 as quarterback Thaddeus Freeman scored from 9 yards out and Ronquillo's fifth extra point. The final score of the half was a thing of beauty as "Running Red" (Richardson) took a Freeman handoff at his own thirty and began to run right, then reversed his field, coming near-side, following a wall of blockers and then he put on the after burners (no one was going to catch him) and 70 yards later - TOUCHDOWN! The extra point (#6) put the dogs up 42-0 at the half. (Red finished the game with 134 yards rushing on six carries while scoring 3 touchdowns. One touchdown came on a 50-yard punt return). This second quarter also featured Lakendrick Washington at running back as he rushed 10 times for 50 yards.

The second half was more of the same - scoring by the dogs and relentless defense against the Trojans. With 5:57 remaining in the third, Red scored from three yards out. Ronquillo's 7th point after was good and the route continued - 49-0. From this point on a lot of the substitute players got into the game as Coach Malone "called off the dogs." Back-up quarterback, Jamarcus Hartsfield scored from 1 yard out with 3:19 left in the 3rd, Ronquillo added his 8th extra point and the score was 56-zip.

The dogs final score came by the "Redman" as Richardson took a punt at midfield and ran it back 50 yards for his 3rd touchdown. #9 by Ronquillo was good and this one was finally over by a score of 63-0.

On the night, the Troy offense never crossed the 50- yard line. The bulldog defense was superb as they held the Trojans to zero first downs, minus 22 yards rushing and only 7 yards passing for a total of minus 15 yards on the night. (The dog defense has not given up a point in district play). Leading the defense in tackles was John Sadler with 12.

The dogs offense finished with over 400 total yards - all on the ground. They had a total of 24 first downs and never had to punt the ball. It was total denomination by the Dogs on both sides of the line!

So the dogs sit at 2-0 district along with the Cameron Yoe at the top. Again these two clubs are headed for a head on collision course come November 8 in Cameron. But for right now the dogs will turn their heads toward the Caldwell Hornets this Friday night in Caldwell. The Hornets are off to a rough start in district play as they have fallen twice - once to Cameron and last Friday night to Rockdale.

Game time 7:30 pm. (For directions to the stadium look elsewhere in the Democrat)
