Marlin Athletic Director, Jerry Malone (Big Dog) notched his one hundredth career victory with a decisive 28-12 win over the University Trojans at Legion Field on September 8.

After a scoreless first quarter, University got on the score board with a 14 yard TD pass from Chris Demerson to Datrion Mitchell. The try for two was no good but University held a 6-0 lead.

The Bulldogs came right back three minutes later, when facing a third and twenty from their own 43, QB Jeremy Modkins faked a handoff on a sweep right and kept the ball, turned on the after burners at streaked 57 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. Mo Smith added the extra point and the dogs went up 7-6 as both team headed for their lockers at half-time.

The third quarter didn't start too good for the dogs as the opening kickoff went untouched by Marlin with University falling on the ball at the bulldog twenty. On the first play from scrimmage, Artalius Douglas scampered 20 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion failed once more but the Trojans held a 12-7 lead.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, Marlin answered on a 5-yard run by Mo Smith. Smith kicked the extra point and the dogs moved back in front 14-12.

Then it was "Desmond Time." With forty seconds remaining in the third quarter, Watson fielded a Trojan punt on his own 32 and cut inside then outside, dodging would be tacklers on the way to a 68 yard return for a touchdown. Once more Smith kicked the extra point to make it 21-12 bulldogs.

Watson wasn't through yet as QB Modkins hooked up with him for a 24 yard scoring pass early in the fourth as Marlin evened their record at 1-1 with a final score of 28-12.

On the night Watson had four catches for 73 yards and one touchdown and add the punt return of 68 yards for another touchdown and you might say Mr. Watson had a night to remember.

The defense was led by Jimmy Quinn with 13 tackles and Jock Johnson with 10. The defense also held the Trojans to only 13 total yards passing.

Next up will be a visit to Midway on Friday, September 15. Game time is 7:30. (Also mark your calendars - Thursday, September 21 at the new Waco ISD stadium - MART vs. MARLIN)
