Dogs Lose More Than The Game In Season Opener

The speed and quickness of the University Trojans led to a 22-14 win over the bulldogs in the season opener for both clubs. But of more importance than the loss of the game is that the dogs might have loss one of their leaders in Mark Jimenez, who went down with a back injury in the first quarter and could be loss for the season. (Update, Mark will be out at least three weeks)

Turning to the game itself, it was the Trojan backfield of Dwone Willis and Roderick Young who combined for 276 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the second half that were the difference.

The final outcome of this game was still in doubt until the very end. Down 14-22 the dogs mounted a drive from their own ten yard line with little time on the clock. The drive ended on a nice run by D'Nerian Wrighter that covered 27 yards to the Trojan 30 but with no time outs left the clock ran out as the dogs came to the line of scrimmage.

There was no scoring in the first quarter as both defenses showed their stuff. Finally with 3:04 left before half-time, bulldog QB Thaddeus Freeman raced 28 yards down the visitor sideline for a touchdown. Alvin Hall ran it in for a two point conversion and the dogs were up 8-0.

The Trojans answered as they took the ensuing kickoff and moved down field with ease. With eleven seconds showing on the clock, Trojan quarterback, Colby Coleman lofted a pass to the endzone where TE Eric Smith out jumped two bulldog defenders for a touchdown. Young ran it in for a two point conversion to make it 8-8 at the half.

In the third quarter, with 7:15 remaining, the Trojans faced a third and 21. They ran a wingback reverse to RB Willis who took it 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Juan Andrade added the extra point and the Trojans took a 15-8 lead.

A turning point in the game came near the end of the third quarter when the bulldogs went for it on a fourth and one from midfield. RB Alvin Hall took the hand-off and plowed straight ahead but came up inches short and the ball went over.

The Trojans wasted little time in taking advantage of this field position. With 57 seconds remaining in the quarter, Young took a hand-off from Coleman, broke a few tackles and rambled 51 yards for a TD. Andrade kicked the extra point and the Trojans extended their lead to 22-8 as we headed to the final period.

The bulldogs weren't ready to quit as Freeman hit Hall with a beautiful screen pass with 3:44 remaining and Hall, following outstanding blocking, outran any other defenders 68 yards to pay dirt. The try for two fail and the final score was University 22 and Marlin 14.
