Bulldogs Drop Season Opener

The University Trojans used a well balanced attack as they rushed for 209 yards and passed for 205 yards and rolled past the dogs 31-7 in the 2002 season opener for both teams at Waco ISD stadium on Friday, September 6.

The Trojans struck first and very quickly as running back Roderick Young took a hand-off from QB Coby Coleman on the first play from scrimmage and raced 61 yards to the Bulldog three yard line. Two plays later Roderick Young scored from one yard out. The point after was good and the Trojans were up 7-0 as people were still getting to their seat.

But the Bulldogs settled down after that touchdown and began to play great defense. The Trojans faced a fourth and two at their own 22 yard line when they went into punt formation. The ball went over the punters head and by the time he fell on the ball, linebacker LaKendrick Washington fell on him at the Trojan one yard line. Result of the play - first and goal Bulldogs at the one. Matterial Richardson took a handoff from QB Thaddeus Freeman and scored from the one. Daniel Ronquillo added the point after and now we had a ball game at 7 all.

The Trojans answered back. Coleman hit speedy receiver Stanley Willis on a 59 yard scoring pass and with the point after the Trojans were back on top 14-7. University was poised to add another touchdown just before half as they moved the ball to the Bulldog five. But the bulldog defense caused a fumble and Darrin Timms recovered to keep the score at 14-7 going to the half.

The second half though turned out to be all Trojans. At the 8:30 mark of the third quarter, Trojan running back, Eric Ransom ran 37 yards for a touchdown, point after was good and then Young scored his second touchdown of the night on a 21-yard run as the third quarter ended. The point after was good and the Trojans went up 28-7. They added a late field goal in the fourth quarter to make it a 31-7 final.

For the Bulldogs it was QB Thaddeus Freeman leading in the rushing department with 73 yards on 10 carries. Freeman also threw for 75 yards hitting on 6 of 15 passes with one interception. His leading receiver was Mark Jimenez with three catches for 30 yards.

Tank Smith added 40 yards rushing on eight carries, all coming in the second half.

The Bulldogs will take to the road again on Friday the 13th as they travel to Hewitt to face the Midway Panthers who lost their season opener to Round Rock McNeil by a score of 20-7. Game time is 7:30 PM.
