Soccer Team Takes Consolation Prize

It was a first ever for the Bulldog Soccer team - Bringing Home A Trophy! In only its third season, the Bulldogs have been playing hard and playing against some of the best 4A and 5A teams in the area. This past weekend saw the Bulldogs entered in the Waco Tournament where they finished 2-1.

In game #1 they took on 5A Waco High to open the tournament. Waco High scored first taking a 1-0 about ten minutes into the game. But back came the Dogs as Daniel Ronquillo tied it up just before the half unassisted.

Waco High though came back to score two more goals in the second half and went on to win 3-1. The Dogs did have 18 shots on goal for the game but could not capitalize except for once. The loss dropped the team into the losers bracket.

In game #2 they played 4A Killeen Harker Heights, a team that beat us soundly last year. This year the Dogs would get revenge. Ronquillo scored an unassisted goal in the first half, and that was all the scoring seen for the rest of the game. Harker Heights came out strong in the second half, but was unable to score on several of their threats. Bulldog, Manuel Calderon kept the Dog defense strong as they battled to the very end.

Game #3 the Dogs took on the La Vega Pirates. The Dogs beat the Pirates back on January 10 at Legion Field by a score of 6-1. The team was a little tired and sore after the Harker Heights game but they hung tough and scored three goals in the first half. Once again Ronquillo got it going scoring the first goal unassisted. Then it was Marco Hernandez scoring off an assist from Louis Vasquez. Ronquillo scored again, unassisted to end the first half with the Dogs up 3 zip. Ronquillo added his third goal of the game off an assist from Vasquez as the dogs went on to win 4-0. And with this victory the Dogs brought home their 1st trophy!

For the tournament, Ronquillo had five goals and Hernandez had one. Luis Vasquez led the team in assists with two and Antonio Reyes had 1.5 shutouts with Vasquez adding a .5.

District play begins January 21 at home against the Lorena Leopards. Game time is 6 PM.
