Soccer Team Takes Fourth In Tournament Play
The Marlin Soccer team took on some pretty hard competition during a recent Tournament over the Christmas holidays in New Braunsfel and came away with an impressive 4th place finish.
Their first game was against San Marcus High School and the team came away with a 4-2 win in a shootout. Daniel Ronquillo scored an unassisted goal in the middle of the first half, and San marcus came back to tie it to send the game into a shootout. Antonio Reyes was goalkeeper for the shootout and stopped three of their four shots on goal. Marco Hernandez, Oscar Lopez, and Hugo Gonzales each scored Marlin goals to capture the win.
The second game was against Fredericksburg. The team lost Luis Ramos to a knee injury early in the game which really impacted their defensive line. Fredericksburg took advantage of this as they scored three goals in the first half and four in the second to win the game 7-0.
The team then had to play Saturday morning in the consolation game against Fox Tech. Marco Hernandez scored on a penalty kick in the first half to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead going into the half. But in the second half it was all Fox Tech as they scored three times to make the final score 3-1.
First year coach Jistine Goodfellow commented on the tournament, "We took 4th overall. The tournament was all 4A and 5A teams, so we were happy with our finish and for the fact that we were missing several players due to vacation."
The team will take on the Lorena Leopards in their next game on January 7.
